Nourishing the Soul XVI: The Power of Eros, The Eros of Power
When Antony met Cleopatra, he owned one third of the world. She was the remarkable reigning Queen of Egypt, taught how to rule, if we can believe Shaw, by Julius Caesar. Was Antony a fool as he set about losing his possession because of this woman, or was it a “World Well Lost,” as Dryden entitled his play about the two? Shakespeare found in the story a way to explore the outer reaches of language, the way we use it and the way it uses us as it shapes and forms our sense of ourselves. We will explore the mystery of whether “imagination can triumph over brute fact” as well as nourish our souls with the food of poetry, music, art, drama, good talk and good silence.
