Invitation to Soul Work

THE HEBREW SCRIPTURES:

A Basic Course in the Hebrew Scriptures as a Living Foundation of the Western Spiritual Tradition.

A Guild Study Center presentation:

In this Study Center class we hope to convey an appreciation for the beauty, power, and psychological relevance of the Hebrew Scriptures, to develop an understanding of the context in which Jesus lived and from which the gospels emerged, as well as to explore:
The origins of the HS and their development as both oral and written Torah (which means teaching or instruction), with an emphasis on the dynamic potential of the Torah for our own lives.

Their major divisions into the Pentateuch, the Prophets, and the Writings, as well as questions about divine inspiration, inerrancy, and canonicity.

The importance of the Hebrew language as expressing the Jewish mind-set of both/and, spirit embodied in substance, rather than the Greek mentality of either/or and spirit/substance division.

The development of various translations from the original Hebrew, with particular emphasis on the Septuagint (the Greek translation used by the gospel writers), the Vulgate, Jerome's Latin version, and the Peshitta, a translation into Syriac/Aramaic.

Important archetypal themes like Covenant, Divine presence, and salvation.

Their profound influences, both explicit an implicit, on the man Jesus and on the writers of the gospels.

In addition, the first hour of each class will be devoted to seminar discussion of specific passages often studied in Records seminars, with emphasis on their relevance to our own psyches and lives. These passages will relate to the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, Jacob wrestling with "the dark figure," and the Covenant. Each of these discussions will be led by a Guild leader-in-training.

This series is open to everyone who is interested in leading Records seminars or in appreciating more deeply the dynamic spirituality of the Hebrew Scriptures.

Leader: Manuel Costa, MA, a life-long student of the Hebrew Scriptures and leader of Guild seminars since 1981.
