Who I am, I Must Become"True personality is always a vocation…. One must obey one's own law, as if it were a daemon whispering of new and wonderful paths." --C. G. Jung Our desire for a meaningful and purposeful life arises from the depth in us that longs for fulfillment. The dissatisfaction that comes over us is, in fact, our deeper Self nudging us to a more conscious and full life. The modern world is full of competing movements and spiritual possibilities, often leading to confusion and cynicism. For many people conventional boundaries have dissolved, and the traditional centers of meaning no longer hold (church, nation, work, family). What does it mean to be one's self in this time of profound and rapid change? This seminar provides opportunity for deep reflection on the urgent questions of our time. We will engage the new science of consciousness in the depth-psychology of Carl Jung along with a non-traditional, questioning approach to the wisdom in the teachings of the historical Jesus. This approach opens us to the authentic sources of personal meaning, authority, and creativity. The guiding concern is always: How can this deepen the consciousness of my own living? Questions and critical reflection guide our work with the Jesus traditions in Matthew, Mark, Luke and Thomas. Deep psychological meaning often emerges in provocative and unpredictable ways. We do not seek consensus or final answers. No previous psychological, biblical or religious knowledge is required. Some of the questions guiding our exploration are: · What is the meaning of my life? · What is the source of joy? of love? · How can I face suffering and evil with courage? · What makes for real relationship and intimacy? · Is there Something Greater than myself? If so, what is its nature? We employ questions and individual experience in searching for truth rather than doctrine, tradition, and pre-packaged answers. Each of us is a deep well of wisdom. Drinking from this well, often called Psyche, Soul, or the unconscious, is a learned skill. We will learn to access our wisdom directly through guided discussion, thoughtful reflection, silence, body awareness and movement, expressive arts, meditation, journal work, music, and nature. The focus is always our own experience. This seminar is a re-visioning of the traditional seminar, The Records of the Life and Teachings of Jesus. All applicants are asked to include a letter with their application stating why they wish to attend and any relevant information about prior experience or study regarding spiritual issues.
