Guild for Psychological Studies

Welcome!

For over fifty years, the Guild for Psychological Studies has conducted seminars that bring together the depth psychology of Carl Jung, the Records of the Life of Jesus (Synoptic Gospels), the Hebrew Scriptures, and material drawn from myth, poetry, world religions, and the evolving images of modern culture and science. Using a process based on Socratic inquiry and dialog, seminar participants carefully attend to images and feelings, discover connections between the personal and collective psyche, and often find a new commitment to the deep and unfolding truth that has been called the Self or Soul.

You are invited to use the menus on the left to explore the seminars we offer, read about upcoming events, learn more about the people of the Guild, view a growing collection of resources, and find out how you can participate in or contribute to the Guild's work. You can use the Guild Information and Contacts link or links throughout many other pages to ask questions about the Guild in general or any particular seminar. Don't forget to browse the boxes on the right side of the home page to see the latest forum and blog posts as well as recent Guild news.

The Heights and Depths of Soul: Exploring cosmic infinity and ocean depths

An "expedition" to the Tech Museum in San Jose

"We have found a strange footprint on the shores of the unknown.  We have devised profound theories, one after another, to account for its origins. At last, we have succeeded in reconstructing the creature that made the footprint. And     lo! It is our own. " – Sir Arthur Eddington

What do we encounter when we reach the edge of the known and dare a further step?

Join us on a journey into the depths of the ocean and the farthest reaches of space.  These realms express Psyche’s beauty and mystery just as much as dreams, myths, and great works of art. As these amazing images awaken the awesome and the terrible, we will encounter the Explorer as part of ourselves and as an impulse arising from Soul itself. Indeed the path of the Explorer is vital because today we are all psychological deep sea divers and astronauts in a cosmos and consciousness that is expanding at breathtaking speed.

A New Planning Process

This summer we have been fortunate to have Matthew Black and Nadine Hathaway working with about a dozen of us in a structured process for analyzing our strengths and weaknesses as an organization and assessing future challenges and opportunities. Matthew and Nadine are both professional organizational consultants, but they have also experienced Guild seminars and understand the nature of our work. The Guild is unique in its approach and vision, yet shares common challenges faced by religious, educational, and nonprofit organizations in general.

Three Perspectives on the Records

Contributions by Richard Naegle, Norman McMullen, and Helen Saul:

Richard Naegle:

For many of us who have been long associated with the Guild, the core seminar and experience has been The Records of the Life and Teachings of Jesus. In many ways, the Records Study, as amplified by Jungian insights, has provided the philosophical, religious, and psychological underpinnings for most Guild seminars. Yet this central seminar seems to be drawing fewer and fewer new people. Why?

How Seminar Ideas are Developed

Have you noticed that the new Guild brochure has a greater variety of seminar topics and formats than in the past? This is largely the result of a collaborative process involving Casting Seeds members and class leaders, mentors, and other leaders.

Is Jung's "Red Book" Relevant to the 21st Century?

Last weekend the C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco had a conference on Jung's _Red Book_. A number of other such conferences are taking place around the Jungian world this year.
